How Do I Clean Dog Urine Off Of My Fitness Equipment?

I was going to use my dumbbells a little while ago (maybe 15 minutes ago) only to find that my sister’s dog had urinated all over them along with my yoga mat. I have 3 sets of dumbbells, a set of 8′s, 15′s and 25′s. It went on the 15′s and 25′s. And I was planning on using the 15′s. I always use those. And of course I always use my mat. The mat was drenched in urine. I am absolutely frustrated because firstly I can’t stand that dog, and two, I care a lot about my fitness equipment. I always make sure it’s put back properly in the corner of the room where I work out in (that one corner is the only place where I have room for it. I have no room for it in my bed room, or anywhere in a cabinet or anything). I don’t know what to do. I know my parents will freak out and I’m even more afraid I’ll have to get new equipment all because of a dog that doesn’t even belong to me or I don’t even like. Any suggestions?

You can use any real cleaner to clean it – Pine Sol, bleach in water mix, white vinegar in water mix, dish detergent in water. However, the dog has a much better sense of smell then humans do, and he will still smell his pee on these items, even if you clean them. And he’s "marked" them as his territory, so he will return to them to pee on them again.

To make it so the dog can no longer smell his pee on these items, you’ll need to buy an enzyme cleaner from the grocery store (pet aisle) or from a pet supply store like Pet Smart. These cleaners make it so dogs can’t smell the pee smell.

So go ahead and wash these items now, with a normal cleaner. Then, as soon as you get a chance, go to the store and get the enzyme cleaner, and follow its label directions. If the pee got on the floor or walls, make sure you use the cleaner on those, too.

See what you can do to make it so the dog can’t get to these items. Is there a way that you can block off that part of the room, so the dog can’t get to your stuff there?

Wipe everything down with some bleach water. Use a solution of 3/4 cup of bleach to 1 gallon of water.

Just clean it with vinegar. It will remove the stain right out.

The best way I have found to get rid of any pet stains and odors is to make a paste of baking soda and rub it onto the spot, then spray it down with vinegar after it dries. If on a carpet, shampoo it up, do not steam clean as it will set the stain. Once you are done shampooing, then a hot water extractor will work great, I usually just use vinegar and water in the extractor as the vinegar smell dissipates when it dries. Just try to clean the urine ASAP, as it comes out easier

Hard to believe, but urine is actually pretty sterile due to the ammonia content

For the mat, I would find a decent day outside and spray it down with a simple green solution, not too strong, and then rinse well and let dry

Another product I found is Rug Doctor Green, it is non toxic and pet friendly, just saturate the area with it and cover with a damp towel, you can leave it up to 24 hours and it even pulls stains out of the padding under the carpet. I learned that by covering it and leaving it that long and the white towel was brown

Absolutely DO NOT use bleach on urine stains as the ammonia and bleach will react releasing toxic vapors. for immediate treatment, keep a mixture of vinegar and water, soak up the mess first and then spray with the vinegar and water mixture. that helps eliminate the odor. If it doesn’t then try a paste of dish soap, shampoo and borax to scrub in, as it is alkaline, but it is dangerous to pets so keep them away from it, then once it dries vacuum and shampoo, the reason for this is that borax comes from boric acid which is used in homemade cockroach poisons and kills them immediately

Shampooing a carpet is necessary rather than steam cleaning due to the tendency of heat to set stains. Another great pretreater or cleaner is simple green, but you may want to dilute it as it is usually concentrated. If you resort to Mean Green or such, buy it at an auto parts shop, as the reason for the higher cost is that is more concentrated since it is made for degreasing and sterilizing.

I learned the hard way not to use citrus based pet cleaners, the citrus oils leave oil spots.

Overall the best and cheapest route for cleaners is simple green, vinegar, denatured alcohol, and kirby shampoo or Zep shampoo. Also a cheap hot water extractor is good if you can afford it as using it after the shampooer removes residue, also the kirby sentria, while expensive, has all the shampooing attachments and though many people dont like the price I have found it well worth it as it keeps my house cleaner than anything

If the dog constantly urinates on carpen, keep a spray bottle of 50/50 vinegar and water, blot the spot and hit it with the vinegar as it kills the odor and will prevent the dog from marking his territory there again
